NYATI jjj DISTILLERY

The only distillery on a game reserve in South Africa, Nyati jjj produces traditional Mampoer (poteen or moonshine) and Mampoer-based products.

Visiting our distillery is a true cultural experience!

THE STORY OF NYATI.

Mampoer - Africa in a bottle - is a potent, traditional, fruit-based liqueur. It was known as Jack’s Jungle Juice in the days when Jack made his particular brand of Mampoer from citrus fruit in his secret still deep in the bush. It was fiery and it was good - but it was barely legal. In time, though, the old man saw the error of his ways, reformed himself and legalised his operation...

Today we’ve stuck closely to Jack’s technique - and preserved his tradition of quality - adding a variety of fruits to our Nyati jjj Mampoer to capture the flavours of Africa.

DISTILLERY TOURS

The name ‘Nyati’ is appropriate because it means ‘Buffalo’ - and our distillery is situated at Buffalo Hills Game Reserve where every Safari Game Drive includes a free distillery tour.

Day visitors may enjoy free Distillery tours on weekdays between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

NYATI JJJ MAMPOER & MAMPOER-BASED PRODUCTS

Nyati jjj Mampoer
A smooth and clear citrus-based distilled spirit, Mampoer is a popular drink on its own and the basis of all our liqueurs.

Nyati jjj Mampoer-based Liqueurs
Flavoured by steeping our mampoer with natural fruits.

Drunken Fruit
We remove the fruit before bottling our liqueurs and pack it separately to make the perfect desert. Try it with your favourite ice cream.

NYATI AND THE COMMUNITY

The Nyati jjj Distillery is a proud member of our local community - and we try to create work opportunities wherever we can. Thus our wooden export boxes are made by Die Werkswinkel (a workshop for the physically disabled in Knysna) and our beadwork is supplied by the HIV Ladies in Port Elizabeth (a support group for women living with HIV / AIDS).
